Alex is an RYA Yachtmaster Instructor and Examiner and a SAMSA Yachtmaster Ocean. He is also a qualified Civil Engineer and Air Force pilot so is able to relate the theory to the practical afloat. Alex presents the RYA Practical Courses aboard our beautiful Farr 38 named “34 South”. The Farr 38 is well known as the classic design that gained recognition for Bruce Farr as possibly the World’s top yacht designer. on the hard She is a beautiful boat to sail and is the ideal vessel to develop your skills. The picture shows “34 South” up on the hard under Table Mountain at her home base, the Royal Cape Yacht Club, South Africa’s Premier Yacht Club and home of our America’s Cup Challenge Bid “Shoshalosa”. She is on the hard for her annual safety inspection by the South African Maritime Safety Authority and the Royal Yachting Association who send an inspector out from England specially to inspect her and the school annually. Sir Francis Drake described the Cape Peninsula as “ a most stately thing and the Fairest Cape we saw in the whole circumference of the globe”. We are indeed privileged to sail in these beautiful waters that abound with sea life of all kinds. Fish in plenty with Tuna and Marlin at the top. Whales and Dolphins, Seals and Penguins are common The birds range from Storm Petrels to Wandering Albatrosses. The weather is generally excellent with lots of sunshine and plenty of wind. Summer is warm with Southerly winds, clear water and crayfish. Excellent sailing. Winter is mild with steady Westerly winds interspersed with rain. Even better sailing.
